College Access Advisor

(based at Southern Maine Community College)

The Maine Community College System (MCCS) is looking for a full-time College Access Advisor to serve the Southern Maine Community College region. The College Access Advisor will work under the student-centered mission of Embark and help students navigate their post-secondary options. The position is responsible for communicating with and traveling to selected high schools and CTEs in the college region to provide group and individualized support for college and career access. The position supports secondary schools by working with Embark scholarship applicants, early college students, and college and career bound students to provide more equitable access to community college opportunities. The position plans, organizes, and administers Embark in the college region to ensure program integrity as an educational partnership between the secondary schools and the local college. This position will report to the Director of Early College on the SMCC South Portland campus.

The College Access Advisor falls within the MEA Administrators bargaining unit, level 3. The required minimum qualifications include: a bachelors degree and one to two years previous teaching or advising experience at either the college or high school level; or an associates degree and two to four years of experience in higher education, knowledge of and experience in student advising and/or career readiness and job placement. Relative work experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis. Masters Degree, experience in teaching/school administration/guidance, and experience in program management are preferred.

The required knowledge, skills, and abilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, group facilitation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of educational environments, school, and college cultures, and adolescent development.
  • Proven program management ability and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Ability to work effectively with data and assure its integrity.
  • Sales management and/or marketing experience.
  • Experience with a learning management system as either a learner or a teacher.
  • Must enjoy working with young adults.
