Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel provides high-level legal advice and services to the University on a wide range of legal issues in the context of higher education.

 

Areas of practice include regulatory compliance, policy review, contract review, data security, immigration, and other transactional legal work.

 

Essential Functions        

  • Prepares written responses to government agencies regarding employment and student issues.
  • Provides legal advice relating to the review, drafting and negotiation of complex contracts across a variety of colleges and departments, including academic affairs, student affairs, facilities, athletics, marketing and communication, development and student enrollment. The Associate General Counsel will support the Office of Finance, specifically in the areas of risk, insurance, pension, tax and contracts.
  • Oversees the preparation of immigration petitions and supporting documents, and provides legal advice on all aspects of immigration law affecting employees.
  • Provides counsel on legal issues involving students, including Title IX compliance, athletics, admission and financial aid, disability accommodations, student records, and student discipline.
  • Collaborates with appropriate University departments to develop, revise, and interpret internal University policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the University’s policy bank and review process.
  • Conducts legal research as directed regarding legal, policy, regulatory and compliance issues impacting higher education institutions.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience        

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited American Bar Association law school
  • Must be licensed to practice law in New York State no later than one year after the Start Date.
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, preferably in higher education or nonprofit law.

 

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills     

  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to convey complex legal concept to non-legal professionals; strong legal research, writing and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $150,000

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $185,000

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
