About the Department

All North Carolina 4-H Camps are managed and operated under the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service through the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) at North Carolina State University, one of two land-grant universities in the state. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land, and economy of North Carolinians. Each Center is managed by a full-time Center Director and supported by Program Directors, Facility Maintenance Supervisors, Food Service Supervisors, and seasonal team members dedicated to providing safe and exceptional facilities, programs, and services for the citizens of North Carolina.

The 4-H Youth Development Department is one of the four components of the Cooperative Extension Service. The department ties directly into the USDA as a Federal partner. The 4-H Youth Department program is the youth education arm of the USDA and thus has ties with all 50 states as a National effort in youth development. The department provides leadership and program support to field faculty in all 100 counties. The outreach of these efforts involves over 200,000 youth and 25,000 volunteers. The department operates, supports, staffs, and designs programs at three education centers.

The mission of the Center is to provide year-round training and education that promotes lifelong learning through outdoor education and recreation programs for all. The Center provides lodging, food service, and programming.

Essential Job Duties

The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor oversees and conducts repairs and improvements to facilities, vehicles, equipment and other infrastructure at the Eastern 4-H Center. The position formulates and implements a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan for all buildings and assets of the Center. This position will also maintain and manage the Center’s swimming pool. In addition, this position will supervise the temporary housekeeper and groundskeeper, seasonal, and year-round staff in their daily duties of cleaning and landscaping.

This position will be assigned to the Eastern 4-H Center which is a year-round conference and training facility located in Columbia, NC.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of the buildings and facilities.
  • Assist with the Center’s user groups by providing event set-up of all facilities.
  • Complete or schedule all weekly, month, bi-annual, annual inspections of various systems around the center.
  • Complete all administrative paperwork necessary for assigned work task.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in the trade(s) areas assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience repairing facility, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to do carpentry, mechanical work, electrical over-site. Knowledge of all areas needed to run a camp.

Required License or Certification

  • Level 1 Wastewater Operator Licenses or the ability to obtain within 3 – 6 months of start.
  • Valid NC Drivers Licenses or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
  • Pool Operators Certification or the ability to obtain within 3 – 6 months of start.
  • Pesticides Certification or the ability to obtain within 3 – 6 months of start.
