DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mother-Child-Adolescent Program (MCAP) has been providing comprehensive and integrated HIV care, social services and clinical research to women, infants, children and youth ages 13-24 for over 30 years. A multidisciplinary team of HIV specialists medical care treatment, health education, mental health counseling, case management and peer support. In addition, as a clinical research site for NIH funded studies, the program also offers innovative clinical and observational studies for women, children and young adults.

The Physician Assistant will provide comprehensive primary and HIV specialty care to youth, young adults and women with HIV/AIDS. Obtain comprehensive history and provide physical examination, order diagnostic tests, follow-up on these and other laboratory tests, triage phone calls, formulate and implement a plan of care. Participate in clinical research activities, recruit, enroll, manage and monitor clients on HIV clinical research studies. Work in cooperation with multidisciplinary health and social service team, UCSD clinical staff, HIV/AIDS research team, community agencies and providers. Use knowledge, ongoing assessments, resources, and available clinical data to help design, develop, and implement patient education and quality management activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART w/in 6 months of hire date.

  • Minimum one (1) year of work experienced as a licensed Physician Assistant.

  • Clinical work experience or training with HIV.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current oral and parenteral drugs used in the management of AIDS related conditions and primary care, including purpose, dose and side effects.

  • Proven knowledge and skills needed in providing comprehensive physical examination and history with emphasis on HIV and AIDS-related conditions, pregnancy and primary care.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams, procedures used in adult medicine including purpose, supplies and/or equipment needed, how to perform test, exam and/or procedure accurately, infection control mechanisms and recording in medical record.

  • Excellent patient interviewing skills to efficiently elicit accurate medical history, triage calls and plan appropriate disposition.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated skill in interacting with a variety of personalities (patients, staff, students,) in a professional, informative, diplomatic, courteous manner

  • Demonstrated knowledge of normal and abnormal laboratory and x-ray results.

  • Proven experience with clinical research activities and guidelines related to consent, ethical conduct and protection of human subjects.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and adapt to changing priorities and frequent interruptions in order to meet specified deadlines.

  • Proficiency in the documentation of patient history, health conditions and outcomes in the electronic health record within required timelines.

  • Experience charting in electronic health records and clinical research databases.

  • Strong skill in assessing patient education needs and designing appropriate teaching plan including evaluation. Knowledge of patient education resources on the web, and in the community.

  • Excellent organizational skills in order to rapidly prioritize activities in a high-volume, dynamic, multiple demand clinic and hospital setting.

  • Strong knowledge of and skill in use of established protocols and ability to identify and establish new protocols as needed.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and experience independently solving problems and making recommendations.

  • Ability to develop and communicate program goals, facilitate productive team performance, develop staff skills, and promote professional and ethical behavior across multidisciplinary health care team.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions

  • Knowledge and experience in quality management activities, ability to measure outcomes, analyze data, initiate and facilitate quality improvement plans.

  • Experience interacting positively, constructively, and effectively with staff, physicians, patients and the general public.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certification from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

  • Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish fluently.

  • Knowledge of the Experimental Bill of Rights to ensure effective advocacy for participants.

  • Skill in obtaining a sexual health history and providing sexual health education.

  • Knowledge of HIV research, including knowledge of HIV disease and treatments with experience in operation and management of clinical trials or studies.

  • Skill in obtaining a sexual health history and providing sexual health education.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 - $201,889 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $73.40 - $96.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
