The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is searching for an Assistant Human Resources Director to oversee the day-to-day human resource operations for the School of Chemical Sciences. The Assistant Human Resources Director supervises a human resource team and supports the team's overall objectives.
Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as a subject matter expert on human resource policies, procedures, activities, and regulations, providing strategic advice and recommendations to leaders and oversees the day to day functions of the HR team; performs related HR transactions. Specific areas include:
- Recruitment, Selection, and Retention- Manage and facilitate all recruitment and hiring needs for the units in close consultation with College and central HR. Oversee visa processing for SCS, working with college work authorization specialist as needed.
- HR Processing- Provide timely, efficient service for all appointment processing (including retiree, emeritus faculty, and unpaid employee appointments), including insight and recommendations on various appointment requests (often non-standard appointments).
- Monitor compliance for assigned units in areas such as: Performance Reviews, Semester appointment submission, Ethics Training, ANCRA Training, and VSL reporting.
- Employee Engagement & Relations– Provide HR knowledge and expertise in responding to questions from potential and current employees regarding HR matters.
Engage in strategic conversations with units on human resource initiatives which may include the following:
- Facilitate robust, employee-focused onboarding and exit strategies, HR processing training and
- mentoring of newly appointed colleagues and guidance for performance reviews, updates to employee job descriptions, probationary reviews, and employee self-evaluations for the units.
- Advise on HR related topics including policy development and implementation; provides expertise related to interpretation of University policies, processes, and procedures; and personnel related situations that occur within the units.
- Collaborate with units to create/implement trainings for current and newly hired faculty, staff, and students.
- Serve on committees as appropriate.
Advise and support unit supervisors on employee relations matters, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution. Work closely with the Associate HR Director-Academics to develop, refine, and implement strategies.
Supervise HR Staff which includes, but not limited to hire, train, assign and view work of, conduct performance evaluations for, address work issues, approve time off for, set work schedules, and set goals for. In absence of a supervisor, approve time off, leave requests, and timesheets as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.
- Five (5) years of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties which included researching, interpreting, and making recommendations based on HR policy.
- Demonstrated experience working with applicant tracking, employee management systems, and other HR reporting tools.
- Experience with employment visas in an academic setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate or Master’s degree in human resources, business administration or related field.
- Recruitment-related training and/or certifications. Professional HR certification preferred (S/PHR, SHRM-S/CP or related).
- Experience with supervision, leadership and/or distribution of labor. Understanding of employment visas in an academic setting.
- Experience with University HR systems including HR Front End, JDXpert, Cornerstone, Banner, I9 Tracker or other similar human resource information systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- Ability to develop/establish strong working relationships with Department Heads, Directors, Faculty, and Staff of assigned units
- Must be able to maintain a high level of discretion and confidentiality.
- Ability to promote non-biased treatment of faculty, staff, students, and prospective candidates.
- Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven track record of customer service to diverse clients.
- Knowledge of state and national HR policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of university and campus polices as they relate to hiring, l-9s, international work regulations, complex academic appointments, and other general employment activities to ensure that all related guidelines and procedures are administered appropriately and accurately.
- Ability to manage and lead Human Resource staff
- Demonstrated working knowledge of routine work applications and organizational skills.
- Sets goals and objectives for team members for achievement of operational results
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $75,000-90,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week) after an initial on-site training period.
