The research team “Atmospheric Transport Processes” led by Andreas Stohl is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group further develops the Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART and uses it in several different fields of research, for instance: Lagrangian studies of heat and water transport in the atmosphere; transport of microplastics and other pollutants in the atmosphere; inverse modelling of greenhouse gases to determine their sources and sinks; interpretation of ice cores.

Your personal sphere of action:

You will work with a Lagrangian Re-Analysis (LARA) data set, which has recently been created in a research project. This data set has been produced with FLEXPART based on the Eulerian re-analysis ERA5 from ECMWF. It consists of “particles” associated with meteorological information at their positions that are continuously traced in the atmosphere for 8 decades. You will use this data set for putting selected extreme weather events into a climatological perspective and studying the causal role of transport of heat and moisture for triggering the events. You will also perform global-scale analyses of specific atmospheric transport mechanisms such as warm conveyor belts or lifting in tropical cyclones. Finally, you will contribute to the creation of a follow-up Lagrangian re-analysis based on forthcoming ERA6 data and using the latest version of FLEXPART.

Duration of contract: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You perform research using the tools and data available in the group.
  • You contribute to the further development of these tools and data.
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You publish your research in leading international journals.
  • In years 2-4 of your contract period, you teach independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You contribute in organizing team meetings and team building activities, as well as other meetings our group is involved in.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master's degree in meteorology, climatology, atmospheric sciences, or in a related field such as physics or data sciences.
  • A talent and interest in computer coding and the ability to write your own data analysis software (e.g. in Python and/or Fortran).
  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • You are able to work independently but are also a team player who enjoys working with other people.
