Job Description

The Financial Aid Counselor is primarily responsible for customer service and outreach. This includes, but is not limited to, meeting with students and their families, assisting them with the completion of financial aid paperwork, and proactively contacting them to facilitate the completion of their financial aid awards.

You will:

  • Work with internal and external customers to explain the financial aid process
  • Provide financial aid and alternative financing options to students and their families in person, on the phone, and via email
  • Receive, review and process financial aid paperwork
  • Provide guidance regarding financial aid and University policies and procedures
  • Organize, manage and provide financial aid outreach services to students
  • Represent the Financial Aid Office at campus events
  • Assist with one or more of the many Financial Aid tasks required (verification, loan processing, etc).
  • Collaborate with other departments as required
  • Coordinate work efforts with other areas of the One Stop to insure non-redundancy of processes and communications

Secondary Duties

  • Assist senior staff with special projects
  • Support the operation of the One Stop Office
  • Perform other duties as assigned

You need:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one to four years of experience in a Financial Aid Office required – past experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Experience with PowerFaids preferred
  • Experience with Banner preferred
  • Outstanding customer service skills and experience in a customer service position required
  • Experience working collaboratively with other service focused offices to enhance the customer experience
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to enhancing the internal and external customer experience is required; ability to manage complex matters appropriately while meeting the needs of the customer and the University
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams is required
  • Excellent organizational skills and great attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and advance multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work with difficult and demanding customers
  • Ability to work independently, use discretion and judgment daily, and take individual initiative as well as the ability to work as a collaborative team member
  • Strong ability to research and identify answers and solutions to problems as they arise
    Ability to work early morning, evening, and some weekend hours as needed is support of student events and initiatives
