Mouse Colony Manager

Job Description

MOUSE COLONY MANAGER, Picower Institute for Learning and Memory – Tsai Lab, will be both hands on with animal research models and play an important administrative role within the lab; responsible for managing and maintaining a large-scale mouse colony used in neuroscience research; responsible for coordinating and preparing animal protocol and addendum submissions for the lab to the Committee on Animal Care (CAC); ensure lab personnel and lab animal work is in compliance with IACUC/CAC/EHS, as well as preparing laboratory space and researcher for twice-yearly CAC inspections of the lab; perform tasks related to mouse colony management such as record keeping, setting up breeding pairs/trios, sampling, genotyping (PCR), and weaning; work closely with researchers to create breeding schemes to meet research objectives; maintain detailed animal inventory spreadsheets; track generational numbers and takes steps to minimize genetic drift within colonies; import/export of lab animals; animal ordering; initiate MTAs as needed; and coordinate and prepare annual renewals of animal protocol and 3-year rewrites.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or related field of study; a minimum of four years of related experience; knowledge of mouse genetics; solid interpersonal and organizations skills, ability to multitask, and effective communication skills (written and oral); ability to work independently, using discretion to problem solve; ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts; attention to detail, excellent time management and organizational skills; and ability to effectively collaborate with researchers. PREFERRED: experience in injections (IP, SQ, IM, IV), and experience working with transgenic mice and colony maintenance. Job #24635
