ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide management and oversight of the day-to-day activities of the GRCC Veterans Center.
- Supervise the school certifying official and any additional veterans services staff members (including VA work study positions and contingent employees)
- Maintain a service model to extend Veterans Center service into evenings and/or Saturday on a regular rotation.
- Provide oversight and supervision for internal systems to facilitate the day-to-day work and create accountability.
- Perform budget control officer duties for Veterans Services, including grant funds and annual reporting fees (ARF).
- Develop, implement, and monitor the annual plan for targeting audience segments (i.e., potential students, current student, faculty/staff) to conduct outreach for and promotion of the VC. Recruitment practices must align with Department of Veterans Affairs regulations.)
- Plan, coordinate, promote student veteran activities offered by the VC. Publish a regular Veterans Services newsletter for enrolled student veterans.
- Utilize email, phone, and text message for enrollment and benefit communication campaigns.
- Collaborate with the GRCC Communications Department to communicate Veteran’s Services programming to students and in the development of student veteran recruitment.
- Manage and maintain the content on the GRCC Veterans Services webpage including but not limited to any and all pdfs, forms, internal links, and external links.
- Stay up to date on federal regulations related to Veterans Benefits, Department of Defense tuition programs, and the VA Principles of Excellence program.
- Promote awareness of the student veteran population on campus and promote training opportunities campus wide as they relate to credit for military experience and competencies.
- Bridge communication of academic resources between Instructional Support and Institutional Planning and Student Success to share tutoring and academic support opportunities for students to access via VC.
- Invite community veterans support services into the Veteran’s Center during the Fall and Winter semesters.
- Work closely with school certifying official and mentors to ensure students receive timely and clear guidance on steps to enroll and receive benefits at GRCC.
- Serve as liaison with faculty and staff to ensure connection to academic and student affairs department and college action projects that relate to the grant outcomes.
- Work closely with the Associate Registrar and Transfer Credit Evaluator on promoting credit for military courses and experience under GRCC’s transfer credit policy.
- Provide trainings on student veteran experiences for interested staff and faculty. Engage students in this work to elevate their voice regarding their educational experience in the military and experience on campus at GRCC.
- Work collaboratively with GRCC Institutional Research Department to conduct evaluation of veteran’s success as recommended by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) Veteran Friendly Schools program.
- Prepare and provide in person and virtual presentation for the VC.
- Prepare reports internally, for community stakeholders. 1) Monthly to track day-to-day operations. 2) Quarterly to track progress on goals/objectives with attention to successes, barriers and corrective action. 3) Annually to summarize goals, objectives, and activities.
- Regularly assess quality of delivered services through focus group and/or survey and through co-curricular assessment.
- Lead the GRCC Veterans Success Team.
- Lead the planning of the annual Veteran’s Memorial Ceremony and luncheon as well as bi-annual student veteran appreciation activities.
- Complete school certifying official certification and 20 hours of professional development annually to maintain active status as secondary certifying official.
- Communicate to college leadership changes related to VA or DoD benefit programs passed by congress or in rule-making sessions. Ensure compliance with implementation deadlines for program changes.
- Support the Associate Registrar and Advising in relation to policies and processes for credit for prior learning and industry training for veterans.
- Implement administrative checks on compliance with VA requirements and accurate benefit files and catalog policies as required by the VA Compliance Survey.
- Actively participate in AVECO, MACRAO certifying officials group, MVAA friendly schools, and WMVCAT.
- This role is a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs will be trained and responsible for reporting Clery Reportable Crimes to Campus Police as required by the Clery Act.
- Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Master’s preferred.
Work Experience
- Required experience working with veterans or special populations or must be a veteran.
- Minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
- Two (2) years or more working in a veteran serving organization or in a higher education setting.
- Experience working in an outreach or recruitment capacity, or relationship building role preferred.
Skills
- Demonstrated budgetary experience.
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of veteran educational benefits. Knowledge of additional VA benefits preferred (i.e. health, housing, etc.)
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated strong accuracy and organizational skills.
Physical Demands
- Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive to off-site meetings, activities, and events.
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to lift and move equipment to support events (50 lbs.).

- An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.
- An interest in working with diverse student populations who represent a wide range of ages, ethnicities, national origins, and abilities.
- Demonstrated initiative and strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
