Position Summary


The Physical Plant Department is recruiting for a full-time HVAC Technician.  Responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of all campus heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.  Assist in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic EMS controls.  Responsible for minor electrical wiring installations and repairs. T
This position requires passing a post-offer physical, functional assessment, and drug screen.

Duties & Responsibilities


  1. Inspects, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on chilled water systems up to 200 tons with helical gear and reciprocating compressors on Carrier and Trane units, hot water boilers, various types of pumps, direct and reverse acting pneumatic control systems, direct digital control systems, constant volume air handlers (single zone and multizone), variable air volume systems, packaged rooftop units with gas, and heat pump units;
  2. Conduct necessary tests of HVAC equipment to determine cause of breakdowns;
  3. Remove and replace faulty subassemblies and major components as needed to complete repairs;
  4. Perform air balance checks on ventilation systems to maintain proper air circulation throughout the buildings;
  5. Monitors campus HVAC systems with Energy Management System (EMS) computer program and makes adjustments as needed;
  6. Installs electronic and pneumatic controls and distribution equipment such as relays and other related equipment;
  7. Assist with electrical repairs and installations in campus buildings and grounds;
  8. Performs monitoring/inspection of HVAC equipment to identify and prioritize maintenance needs;
  9. Respond to emergency calls during non-business hours;
  10. Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED is required;
  • Must have a valid/current U.S. EPA Type II or Universal CFC license;
  • Must have a minimum of two years progressively responsible experience in a commercial HVAC setting; experience must include installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC equipment; 
  • Preferred qualifications include having completed a HVAC training program or having a valid TDLR HVAC Technician Certification;
  • Must have experience working with voltages of 24 through 480 volts;
  • Ability to understand the proper use of the appropriate mechanical and electronic testing devices;
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, construction drawings and technical manuals;
  • Ability to operate a computerized building environmental management system (EMS), experience with Johnson Controls Metasys preferred;
  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds; must be able to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds; must be able to work indoors or outdoors; 
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s license and be able to drive College vehicles;
  • Must be detail oriented, dependable and able to maintain cooperative working relationships with all levels of College personnel, students and visitors.
  • Must possess a smart phone or other approved device and agree to install and utilize the ExakTime Mobile App to capture and record all employee time records.
  • Must obtain TDLR HVAC Technician Certification within three years of employment.

Physical Demands


  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to handle tools and parts.
  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds. 
  • Must be able to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds; 
  • Must have the mobility to access small work areas and work in varying temperatures and heights; must be able to work indoors or outdoors.
  • Must be able to hear light to moderate sounds; the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally loud.
