Course Support Specialist

Job Description

Johns Hopkins Engineering Center for Teaching and Learning Design (CTLD) is seeking a Course Support Specialist to support the Whiting School of Engineering in the development of online and technology-facilitated courses. The candidate will work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team to plan, design, develop, and revise online courses.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the concurrent design and development of multiple online course developments. Adherence to CTLD’s online course quality standards.
  • Assist CTLD with compliance with established accessibility (ADA/508/UDL) standards as well as university/division standards.
  • Serve as a member of a course development team, which may include instructional designers, subject-matter experts, faculty, instructional technologists, multimedia specialists, etc.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship and open communication with other members of the CTLD.
  • Initiate and supervise the online course builds within the learning management system (Canvas).
  • Edit course videos for quality.
  • Support faculty development and other special projects.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with Instructional Designers and partners to meet project deliverables.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge (awareness/appreciation) of current and emerging instructional technologies and demonstrated experience in integrating these in online instruction using best practices.
  • Ability to utilize strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills when interacting with faculty members and colleagues internal and external to the organization.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and solve problems in creative and productive ways.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Demonstrated experience in working with streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types and formats, and related software and platforms (e.g., Camtasia, Panopto, etc.).
  • Proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures, systems and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate using a variety of synchronous meeting tools (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
  • One year of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • One year professional experience in an academic environment, designing and developing distance or online instruction.
  • Experience developing instruction for science, technology, engineering, or math disciplines.
  • Demonstrated use of Quality Matters rubric or similar course design quality standards.
  • Experience working with both MacOS and Windows platforms.
  • Experience with video editing (i.e., Camtasia, Descript, etc.)
  • Experience working directly with faculty members and/or subject matter experts.

Role/Level/Range: ACRO37.5/03/CF  
Starting Salary Range: $22.75 - $40.50 HRLY (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: M – F, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
