Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Lab Assistant is responsible for maintaining high quality instructional support, help maintain a safe kitchen environment and ensure the proper care of all culinary arts kitchen equipment and its essentials. In addition, the Lab Assistant will oversee the daily operations of the Culinary Arts Kitchen Labs. Other duties may be assigned by immediate supervisor. May be required to work outside regular working hours. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities- Work closely with Culinary Arts Program staff and instructors.
- Assist the Culinary Arts instructors in the preparation of class and laboratory teaching aids, culinary arts sponsored luncheons and performing general office duties.
- Assist the Culinary Arts students as directed by the instructors with the development of appropriate instructional materials.
- Assist instructors in maintaining food product inventory and the culinary arts garden.
- Provide a safe environment for the students and monitor Culinary Arts Kitchen Labs to ensure proper care and security of all materials and equipment.
- Assist the Culinary Arts instructors with the supervision of students in the Culinary Arts kitchens.
- Ensure that all teaching materials and equipment are available for class use.
- Organize Culinary Arts Kitchen by taking inventory of materials, groceries, supplies and equipment which are available for students and instructors.
- Under supervision of instructors, assist with the special needs of students.
- Participate in professional development activities offered by the department and/or by the college.
- Work a flexible schedule as determined by instructional activities.
- Serve as a tutor for students enrolled in Culinary Arts classes.
- Follow the proper procedures for requesting instructional supplies, expendable supplies, and turn in timesheets on a timely basis.
- Assist in purchasing food products for student kitchen activities and submit required receipts and accounting documents promptly.
- Support the recruitment activities of the College by participating in career days and other activities to promote the College's programs and curricula.
- Follow the academic calendar and other policies and procedures adopted by the LC Board of Trustees.
- Provide information and/or data to the requesting officer so that proper reports may be completed and filed with the proper educational agency, funding agency, or accrediting agency.
- Maintain FERPA standards as applied to public institutions of higher learning.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Department Chair, Dean of Workforce Education, Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and LC President.

Required Qualifications:- High school diploma and Culinary Arts Certificate.
- Must have at least two years of work experience in the hospitality industry.
- City of Laredo Food Handler Permit.
- Serv-Safe Certification
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have knowledge of culinary arts.
- Knowledgeable, mature, and concerned with the academic progress of participants.
- Must demonstrate and maintain excellent working relationships with the program staff.
- Must be able to assist in the development of appropriate recipes.
- Must have some computer knowledge.
- Must be able to communicate in English and Spanish both orally and in written form.
- Must have effective communication skills.
- Must be able to show enthusiasm, take initiative, have organizational skills and supervisory abilities.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with others.
- Must provide assistance to students.
- Must monitor and ensure proper care and security of all Culinary Arts resource materials and equipment.
- Must be able to work outside regular working hours.
- Must be able to use personal vehicle to travel to grocery stores and laboratory/internship/coop sites off-campus.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work inside a well lighted and air conditioned area most of the time.
