Job Summary
A leading university starts with leading facilities. EWU is currently seeking an Access Control Security Specialist in our growing facilities and maintenance department. This is a new position at EWU.
- Under direction of the Access Control Supervisor, the primary purpose of this position is supporting and ensuring the availability, proper configuration, and functioning of the access control systems used at Eastern Washington University. This includes the installation, maintenance, monitoring of electronic building access security hardware along with the daily operation and support of the university’s access control system and associated software applications.
- This position will help ensure integrity and availability of the access control security system, connectivity, and data through planning, analysis, development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of the system.
- Additionally, this position will support students, faculty and staff by providing keys/electronic access cards to access campus buildings and/or rooms and associated maintenance needed by these systems and equipment related to the Access Control Shop.
- The salary for this position is $65,772 – $76,225. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills.

Conditions of Employment

Required Qualifications
- Associate degree or completion of a two-year accredited course as an Access Control Technician or similar and/or four years of applicable experience in installation, repair and maintenance of electronic and electro-mechanical access control systems and devices, physical security systems (access control, video surveillance and/or fire alarm), or other related experience.
- Hands-on experience with physical security systems including access control systems, key management systems and electronic hardware.
- Working knowledge and experience with electronics, computers, networks, communications devices, door and locking hardware, alarm devices, and software with emphasis on card access systems.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of products (e.g., MS Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, effectively and proficiently, involving a wide array of systems and applications and ability to quickly adapt to changes and prioritize tasks/responsibilities.
- Demonstrated analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated customer service, organizational, prioritization, multitasking, communication skills with ability to exercise good judgment under pressure and critical conditions.

- Experience implementing, configuring, and integrating 3rd-party software solutions.
- Knowledge of and experience with existing system, legacy access control system and components such as TAC/Schneider Electric/INET7.
- Low Voltage Electrical License
- Additional relevant vendor and manufacturer training certifications such as those from the following groups: Allegion, Dorma Kaba and Assa Abloy

Access Control System Installation and Administration
- Responsible for the implementation, administration and maintenance of physical access/security systems and programs including INET7 and Genetec.
- Assigns access rights based on established protocol; configures schedules, holidays, time codes; alarm routing; and other functions.
- Assist with the security access process and is responsible for facilitating the creation/renewal/expiration/deletion process of security access.
- Monitor and manage the health of access control platforms. Identifies issues and responds to outages, equipment failures, breakages, etc. Works with other staff and vendors to determine and implement solutions.
- Collaborate on system modifications and system projects.
- Complete projects involving security systems, hardware, building systems and technology as assigned.
- Performs user imports, exports, and user account maintenance.
- Manage/configure/debug specialized endpoints such as card readers, biometric equipment, wireless devices and various electronic input and output devices.
Outcome: Access control systems are properly installed, configured, and maintained.

Access Control System Support and Documentation
- Processes requests for card access and modifications; monitors, tracks, and evaluates card access activity system wide.
- Provide frontline support and maintenance of physical security systems and software applications.
- Troubleshoot card and access issues for end users. Clearly communicate with clients in a professional and timely manner to keep them informed about the progress of their service requests and incidents.
- Responsible for performing technical problem solving or troubleshooting and/or testing of access control hardware and software.
- Assists in identifying and resolving issues with access control software and hardware by working with vendors and internal departments to update and troubleshoot software, and escalates issues as needed.
- Resolve access control system issues using system analysis tools and software to discern the most suitable solution(s)/processes(s) available.
- Develop resource reference materials for systems (such as user manuals, online help pages, tutorial videos and web page content, etc.)
- Trains others on access control systems and operations as needed.
- Serves as a liaison for Access Control issues and coordinates with other EWU staff on access control issues including IT, Facilities and Planning, and Capital Construction.
- Assists in the development of emergency response protocols as it relates to access control.
Outcome: Access control system issues are promptly and effectively resolved. End users and departments are properly supported.

- Identify deficiencies in previous completed physical security access process to ensure campus security and provide satisfactory campus solutions.
- Maintain knowledge of, and recommend, new security technologies for implementation based on objectives and university needs. Operate and maintain new security technology.
- Understand and discuss the application and implications of changes to process, policies, and procedures in physical access/security systems.
Outcome: Technical knowledge and expertise is maintained by the Specialist. Appropriate recommendations for system changes, upgrades, and procedures are provided to campus departments and to Access Control management.
