Emerging from the University’s new Strategic Framework, the Ethics Initiative is a collaborative cross-campus initiative to establish Notre Dame as a premier university for research in ethics, offering superb training for future generations of ethicists and ethical leaders and directing all of our efforts toward guiding and strengthening public understanding of the most significant ethical issues of our time.

The Assistant Director for Grants and Partnerships (ADGP) is responsible for research support and grant management, from inception to execution, and assists in the writing of grants related to applied and foundational research, as needed. This includes the ND-IBM Lab, the faculty program chair for technology ethics, activities to advance business ethics, and grants to support other areas of applied ethics research.

Under the direction of the Director of Research Strategy and External Engagement, he/she is also the primary programmatic leader for key areas of applied ethics research agendas. He/she implements the ECG’s strategic plan related to applied ethics, particularly tech ethics, and works with the ND-IBM Lab campus leadership to design and complete projects relating to technology ethics. The ADGP facilitates and manages an annual call for proposals and showcases research impact in the area of applied ethics, particularly technology ethics. The ADGP will have advanced knowledge in research and grant administration in order to comply with grant regulations, as well as have the skillset to oversee the subawards for the IBM grants.

The ADGP supports communications to highlight ECG’s ethics research, being the regular point of contact for ND-IBM Lab and other PIs in soliciting and tracking project updates for storytelling. He/she is also responsible for events communications (invitations, posters, emails, etc) for the ND-IBM Lab and other events advancing applied ethics research. The ADGP will be required to establish reporting metrics and create protocols to ensure accurate stewardship of the ECG grants. This includes identifying key research areas in which there is potential growth for the ECG to include in the strategic planning.

Cultivating and stewarding relationships
with faculty and external partners, the ADGP supports campus partners focused on raising applied ethics research in association with the EI/ECG. He/she liaises with stakeholders affiliated with the industry, corporations, faith-based and non-profit leaders, government experts, and other organizations working in areas relevant to the ECG’s research agenda in applied ethics.

Finally, the ADGP has operational duties which include the planning and execution of small scale events to support areas of applied ethics and handles administrative priorities for the Research team. As determined by ECG leadership, the ADGP participates and supports programs and activities of the EI and ECG beyond the immediate scope of his/her portfolio.

This is a limited-term position for three years with the intention to make it non-limited once funding is secured. Occasional evening and/or weekend work is required, particularly during high-volume grant and programmatic seasons.

The ADGR will report to the Director of Research Strategy and External Engagement.

The responsibilities of the Assistant Director are summarized below:

  • Grant Management/Strategic Research Support for Applied Ethics (50%):
    • Manages existing research grant programs, particularly for applied ethics research including the ND-IBM Lab, in partnership with Notre Dame Research (NDR)
    • Works closely with NDR and the Office of the Provost to ensure timely reports or requirements related grants, including IBM, are well managed and met.
    • Tracks and manages research outputs and outcomes affiliated with the ND-IBM Lab and other PIs.
    • Maintains stakeholder relations in conjunction with faculty, managing directors, and CFR.
    • Facilitates research and scholarly projects/collaborations/activities related to ECG applied ethics programs with a special attention given to the ND-IBM Lab for technology ethics.
    • Plans, facilitates and oversees annual calls for proposals for applied ethics research agendas.
    • Produces and implements policies, processes, and best practices to showcase research outputs and impact in the areas of applied ethics.
    • Analyzes the current ECG applied ethics outreach, and helps identify key areas of growth for the institute in applied ethics
    • Coordinates and supports seminars, lectures, and conferences which highlight faculty research and scholarship in applied ethics.
  • Reporting, Communications, Partnerships (30%)
    • Meets regularly with PIs, faculty researchers, and/or granting agency leadership to ensure strong communication, alignment, and stewardship related to projects being sponsored.
    • Serves as a regular point of contact for ND-IBM Lab and other PIs in soliciting and tracking project updates for storytelling.
    • Responsible for events communications (invitations, posters, emails, etc) for the ND-IBM Lab and other events advancing applied ethics research.
    • Liaises with stakeholders affiliated with the industry, corporations, faith-based and non-profit leaders, government experts, and other organizations working in areas relevant to the ECG’s research agenda in applied ethics.
  • Grant Writing and Grant Development (10%)
    • Contributes to and supports new grant submissions on behalf of the ECG, in partnership with the NDR and Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) teams.
    • Researches and benchmarks relevant data to support ECG faculty PIs on grant proposals.
    • Writes and helps to edit grants as determined by the ECG faculty and/or managing directors.
  • Operations and Administrative (10%)
    • Plans and executes small scale events to support areas of applied ethics.
    • Handles administrative priorities for the Research team.

As determined by ECG leadership, the ADGP participates and supports programs and activities of the EI and ECG beyond the immediate scope of his/her portfolio.

This is a 3 year, limited-term role with the possibility of an extension.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in humanities with preference given to candidates with a master’s-level degree or higher.
  • Conversant with and demonstrates knowledge in technology ethics
  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, creativity, and ability to successfully lead multiple projects within a fast paced environment and condensed timeline. Proven project management abilities.
  • Effective in organizing, writing, and managing annual reports and compliance documents.
  • Works seamlessly with faculty and researchers.
  • Strong relational and interpersonal skills and able to cultivate effective relationships with funding agencies, grantors, and other key stakeholders.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative, able to take initiative and be agile in an expanding, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has grant writing experience and/or familiar with pre and post-award processes within an academic, research environment. Experience working with specific types of grants (e.g., federal, foundation, corporate).
  • Proven track record on designing, planning, and executing high-profile events for stakeholders.
  • Ability to contribute to or develop strategic initiatives for funding and grant management.
