Position Overview
The product owner intern will closely work with the software product and engineering teams in charge of the clinical genomics variant annotation, interpretation, and reporting platform that is supporting our next-generation sequencing based precision oncology portfolio of tests. They will work with the product owner team to streamline and document the improved requirements management process and apply the process to gather requirements for software solutions to solve business problems or unmet user needs. The intern will generate user stories containing clear software requirements and supporting visual artifacts (wireframes, process maps, data flows) for software engineering teams to understand what to build and test.
This is an onsite internship; opportunity will be based in San Diego, CA.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work with product team leads to improve the requirements management process and document it in a standard operating procedure. This can include migration of existing requirements to a new requirements management tool.
- Partner with the variant annotation, interpretation, and reporting product and engineering teams to complete discovery, gather user needs, define functional requirements, and deliver improved or new capabilities for Users and customers.
- Generate user stories containing defined software requirements and supporting visual artifacts (wireframes, process flows, data flows) for agile teams as part of the development cycle.
- Participate as a product owner to clarify, defend, and prioritize requirements and user stories in SCRUM ceremonies (grooming, sprint planning, daily stand-up, sprint review, and retrospectives).
- Present work performed to the Medical Informatics team.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Scheduling requirements:
- Ability to work designated schedule.
Physical requirements:
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 100% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
- Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's/Master's degree in field of Life Sciences, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or software engineering.
- Proficient computer skills to include Internet navigation, Email usage, and word processing.
- Preference giving to candidates with a record of outstanding academic achievement.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Salary Range:
$37,000.00 - $59,000.00The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis.
