About the Department

The IR-4 Project is a national Federal/State partnership research program to assist farmers of fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, ornamentals, and other specialty crops by facilitating registration of safe and effective chemical and bio-based pest management products.

The IR-4 Project is needed because the crop protection industry focuses their research efforts on major crops such as corn, soybean, and cotton that provide the companies adequate return on their development investment. Without IR-4, farmers of specialty crops would only have access to a few crop protection products to protect their crops.

IR-4 Project Headquarters provides national leadership, coordination and regulatory compliance for the IR-4 Project research activities performed by approximately. 125 scientists at over 20 public sector research farms and four analytical laboratories throughout the United States.

Essential Job Duties

Reporting to the Associate Director for Regulatory Sciences, the IR-4 Project Research Assistant is responsible for maintenance of IR-4 research data in the IR-4 Project’s custom database to document the progress of research on specialty food crops. Most activities must be performed following processes allowed under United State Environmental Protection Agency’s Federal Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (Chapter 40, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 160).

Key activities includes:
  • Independently manage and coordinate distribution of incoming data documenting receipt in IR-4 custom database, and routing data to the appropriate study director or biologist for technical review.
  • Assisting study directors and biologists in managing multiple aspects of IR-4 study conduct.
  • Managing IR-4 Project’s archives.
  • Key miscellaneous duties.

Job Description/Duties Included:

Independently manage and coordinate distribution of incoming data (30%):
  1. Be the point of contact at IR-4 Headquarters for distribution of all raw data sponsored by the IR-4 Project including Field Data Books, Contributing Scientist Reports, Analytical Summary Reports, Seed Treatment Reports, Food Processing reports, Efficacy and Performance reports etc.
  2. Document receipt of raw data in IR-4’s custom tracking database, maintaining accurate and consistent records.
  3. As requested, travel to the Food Use Workshop and attend the National Research Planning Meeting to document decisions and keep the database updated and current.
  4. Communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders using the database.
Assisting study directors and biologists in managing study conduct (20%):
  1. Develop the initial draft of the residue study protocols and provide to study directors in a timely manner after the Food Use Workshop and as needed throughout the year.
  2. Post the draft protocols (residue and performance) on the IR-4 website to solicit input from research participants and stakeholders.
  3. Assign appropriate study identification to research; enter this data/information into IR-4 databases.
  4. Coordinate the collection of study director. biologist and/or sponsor signatures authorizing the protocol.
  5. Distribute signed protocols to assigned researchers and other stakeholders.
  6. Assist study directors in preparing amendments and deviations for residue protocols.
Manage the IR-4 Project Archives (20%):
  1. Following IR-4 Project Standard Operating Procedures and EPA Good Laboratory Practice regulations ensure that all data are filed in IR-4’s on-site active or long-term off-site archives.
  2. Promptly assist study directors and other authorized individuals to send out and retrieve archived data.
  3. Assure appropriate documentation of additions and removal of data. Make database entries to reflect these, so that archived material may be located quickly.
Event Support (10%):
  1. Provide event support to the regulatory and biology teams for the Research Symposium, Industry Technology Session, Food Use Workshop, National Research Planning Meeting, and others as required.
Key Miscellaneous duties (20%):
  1. Responsible for ordering Test Substance for IR-4 sponsored residue research with food crops.
  2. Maintain the EPA GLP required Master Schedule that contains the estimated dates of critical events in IR-4 research.
  3. Assist in the development, distribution and archival of submission documents as required by US EPA.
  4. Provide additional technical and administrative support for study directors and biologists.
  5. Other necessary functions as assigned by IR-4 Directors and Managers.
  6. Provide backup to other IR-4 Project Research Assistants in their assigned duties including (but not limited to):
    1. Process all new Project Clearance Requests.
    2. Update status of company support for new, potential or researchable projects.
    3. Assist IR-4 Regional Offices in the development of project lists for priority setting.
    4. Coordinate and enter information into databases in advance, during and after IR-4 Priority Setting workshops.
    5. Facilitate information needed for IR-4’s National Research Planning Meeting.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in biology, entomology, plant pathology, chemistry, weed science or a related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Able to efficiently multi-task, perform repetitive data entry tasks with high precision and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively with guidance and instruction but without needing constant direct supervision.
  • Ability to maintain attention to details, prioritize and meet deadlines and possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience working in applied pest management research with documented training in Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Experience with applied pest management research.

  • Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
