2025 Internship - Vehicle Design and Technologies Intern

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Does vehicle design sound like a fun challenge, especially in the area of Hypersonics? How about missiles, unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), and roto-craft? Do you have a passion for working on state-of-the-art research to advance our country’s capabilities?

Join our team to design, evaluate, and test a variety of cutting edge vehicles to meet critical national needs.  Use multi-disciplinary design and optimization techniques to balance aerodynamic, thermal, propulsion and structural design elements.  Leverage advanced software to analyze vehicle parameters and characterize performance.  Work with a team of experts who are outstanding at what they do and have fun doing it.

You want to be part of the Vehicle Design and Technologies Group - we design the future!

Depending on your areas of interest, some of the ways you can contribute are:

  • Predict and model the aerodynamic characteristics of various air-vehicle configurations including hypersonic re-entry vehicles, supersonic and hypersonic air-breathing concepts, and subsonic fixed-wing or rotorcraft UAVs.
  • Perform multi-fidelity analysis using commercial and in-house CFD and thermal software in support of vehicle aerothermal design and analysis across various flow regimes from subsonic to hypersonic.
  • Plan and execute ground tests and design models for various wind tunnel and arcjet facilities.  Conduct post-test analysis to validate computational predictions then create and improve high fidelity models.
  • Design future conceptual vehicles, performing detailed multidisciplinary system analysis including integration with launch platforms.
  • Optimize hypersonic propulsion designs including inlet design, flowpath analysis, system integration, test, and evaluation.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong communication skills and can work and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Note: When prompted to upload attachments, please include a copy of your college transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
