Engineer Diver (Structural Focus) - Entry / Junior Level

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively seeking an engineer with structural engineering focus and commercial diving certification to perform both structural design and inspections. The successful new hire will join our San Diego office and local dive team. As the successful Diver, you will be working with a team of experienced professional engineer-divers that provides consulting services to clients - primarily in Southern California (SoCal). Occasional travel to other areas throughout the U.S. (including Hawaii) and abroad will also be required, but most evenings you will be home. The principal function of this position is to be part of a team that evaluates marine structures and ports through above and underwater engineering inspections; follow-on report preparation; load-rating analyses; remaining service life analyses; and development of structural repair, rehabilitation, or replacement designs. Design tasks will include conceptual development; operational considerations; structural analysis; and preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates. We perform these inspections for marine terminal operators, private clients, states, municipalities, the US Navy and many more!

Duties and responsibilities:

- Performs site investigations of marine structures, bridges, and other infrastructure assets
- Ensures that the scope of work is fulfilled as directed and that the contracted deliverable is submitted out on schedule and as budgeted
- Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection team and of other engineering disciplines
- Analyzes deficient components of marine structures to assess load capacity
- Prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates and supporting documentation
- Assists with civil and structural design
- Performs other duties as required

Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university
- Master's degree in Structural Engineering preferred
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred and required within 6 months of commencing employment
- Certified Commercial Diver - ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA or ADAS required
- NHI/NBIS bridge inspection qualifications a plus
- Entry to 4 years of related diving and inspection experience; design experience strongly preferred
- Possess a valid driver's license in good standing
- Ability and willingness to travel as required. Most work is local/regional; however travel can be up to 1 to 2 weeks in duration if needed
- Boater Safety Card preferred
- Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients
- Possession of or ability to obtain within a couple months of hire a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certification preferred
- Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:
$37.00 to $49.00 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualification in job description. In addition to salary, Moffatt & Nichol also offers generous dive pay along with a personal dive equipment reimbursement program.
Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California market.
Working conditions:
The incumbent works in both the office and field:
- Office work requires ongoing design work requiring focus
- Field work requires diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements
- Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities
- Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements
Physical requirements:
This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:
- ADCI (or equivalent) diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
- Field work requires incumbent to carry diving and inspection equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
- The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat.
