Manager for Center and Initiative Communications

Job Description

Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking an experienced and savvy marketing professional for the position of Manager for Center and Initiative Communications. In close relationship with their Marketing and Communications (MarComm) colleagues and collaborating with faculty and others throughout Carey Business School, this individual’s primary responsibility is the consistent, productive, resourceful support of Carey’s growing set of academic and research centers and initiatives (centers) in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Washington, D.C. Working to identify opportunities, minimize obstacles, streamline processes, and deliver on that support, the incumbent will interact daily with faculty members and researchers of various specialties and areas of expertise to advance their work and communicate the center’s relationship to Carey Business School, ultimately driving recognition of Carey’s excellence in research and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Marketing and communications for centers (75%)

  • Working with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, integrate the mission and interests of each of Carey’s centers, in the overall brand awareness efforts of the institution.
  • Discover and advise the Senior Director of Strategic Communications on general and specific needs for centers, including, but not limited to, budget, resources, bandwidth, and event support.
  • In collaboration with center directors, develop annual marketing plans for each of Carey’s centers, , aimed at establishing and consistently delivering on mutually understood and agreed-upon priorities for center/initiative support.
  • Lead the execution of center marketing plans, working collaboratively with Carey’s MarComm team members as appropriate, and/or with external vendors e.g., website, collateral, video, photography, writing, etc.
  • Anticipate center marketing and communications needs based on interests, and advise center directors and staff proactively on best practices and most effective and deliverable options for promotion and associated deliverables.
  • In consultation with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, manage external vendors as needed, including proposal sourcing, evaluation, and contract execution.
  • Manage centers support budget allocated from MarComm’s overall budget and dedicated to the execution of marketing plans for centers and initiatives.
  • Research and identify ideal opportunities for establishing presence in the area of a center’s interest.
  • Champion and ensure the centers’ adherence to the Johns Hopkins University and Carey Business School brand guidelines.
  • Identify opportunities to publicize to audiences, ranging from highly specialized to very broad, the work and outcomes of Carey’s centers in ways and avenues appropriate to the particular center.
  • Write or collaborate with writer(s) and specialists to craft narratives around the work, research, partnerships, and other efforts of each centers’ webpages, Carey web publications, Changing Business research e-newsletter, Carey social media, traditional and new external media outlets, and marketing collateral.
  • Identify brand-building opportunities to align each center with Carey Business School in outward-facing ways.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Communications, the Office of the Dean, and the Office of Faculty and Research, identify and facilitate internal communications to help the Carey community become increasingly familiar with the work of each center.
  • Coordinate and manage competing or overlapping priorities among centers and between centers and other school interests in MarComm’s portfolio, ensuring optimal delivery of support needs.
  • Facilitate centers’ presence and content on their own web pages and the broader Carey Business School website, including communications related to conferences, white papers, research, projects, partnerships, funders, and other areas of reputational interest.
  • In consultation with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, the Senior Social Media Strategist, the Media Relations Specialist, the Content Strategist, and the Website Strategy and Analytics Manager, evaluate and report to each center regularly on metrics regarding digital and media distribution of center-related content.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Creative and the Senior Graphic Designer, design and distribute print and digital collateral as needed.


Support for high-profile speaking events (15%)

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications and the Communications Specialist, facilitate coordination and execution of high-profile speaking events that align with Carey center and initiative efforts.
  • Assist in identifying and executing storytelling efforts around high-profile speaking events related to Carey’s centers, including web content, social media posts, email communications to target audiences, and other deliverables.
  • Assist in determining ideal marketing and communication about center-related high-profile speaker events in both Baltimore, MD, and Washington, D.C.

  • Hands-on experience with event coordination, creation of promotional materials, and digital analytics tools.
  • Strong ability to leverage data to inform both marketing and communications decisions.
  • Demonstrated initiative, attention to detail, and team management skills.
  • Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including news stories and marketing copy.
  • Knowledge of social and mobile media, including Facebook, X, and LinkedIn.
  • Understanding of CRM software, CMS platforms (WordPress), Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Analytics, Mailchimp or other email platforms, other tracking tools, social media and digital marketing platforms.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of related experience in advanced public relations or communications preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $62,900 - $110,100 Annually ($84,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
