Graphic Designer

Job Description

The Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a Graphic Designer to join the school’s Communications team. Reporting to the Communication Associate, this position supports a wide range of projects.


The Graphic Designer creates print, digital, and multimedia- assets that reflect the Johns Hopkins brand, particularly with its target audiences of Krieger School students (current and prospective), faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and members of the Dean’s Office. The designed collateral is part of a greater communications strategy that supports academic excellence, student recruitment, editorial and content materials, fundraising, priorities of the dean, alumni outreach, and audience building from a visual and communications perspective. This hybrid position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key player in producing content that advances the mission and vision of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Create effective print and digital materials that follow the university’s branding standards and engage a variety of audiences.
  • Arrange and conduct client consultations to manage design expectations.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and manage photography shoots.
  • Assist the senior art director as needed with digital and/or print projects.
  • Design several sections of Arts & Sciences Magazine, which comes out twice a year.
  • Create designs HTML for multiple projects such as event invitations, programs, notecards, case statement templates, emails, and html banners.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Krieger School’s Communications team.
  • Maintain a consistent style for collateral material.
  • Manage a photo archive system and metadata applications.
  • Make image/photo updates to the KSAS website.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • May hire skilled freelance vendors such as photographers, and be able to direct them around their duties, manage their work, and achieve project outcomes.
  • Occasionally manage a student worker.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Compelling portfolio of print and digital design work that demonstrates a and range of aesthetics and client-focused solutions to communications challenges. Applications without a portfolio will not be accepted.
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • High level of familiarity with the creative process in problem-solving and crafting solutions to communications challenges. Maintains exceptional work quality in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines and deliver finished designs on time
  • Strong conceptual skills and an aptitude for developing various aesthetics and concepts from diverse subject matters.
  • Strong type and page layout skills across a variety of platforms.
  • Adept in digital design for web pages and applications aligned with usability, accessibility, and web standards.
  • Excellent eye for detail and an active listener able to incorporate feedback and revisions.
  • Self-motivated, strong work ethic with excellent multitasking, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and negotiate issues via consensus-building.
  • Familiarity with offset and digital printing processes (pre-press, press checks, finishing) as well as printing bids and estimates.
  • Demonstrates excellent teamwork, professionalism, team building, communication, and motivation in a dynamic creative workplace, both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multiple populations including professors, scientists, students, donors, staff, and alumni.


Level of Independent Decision Making

  • The position requires a medium to high level of decision-making once they understand the university branding mechanisms.
  • The position will need to communicate and work on projects with professors, members of the Dean’s Office, and KSAS staff.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • In-depth knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; familiarity with Illustrator preferred. Experience with other Adobe Creative Suite programs is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, with working knowledge of additional MS Office software.
  • Experience tagging photos using PhotoShelter, Lightroom, or other photo management systems.
  • Familiarity with HTML and email composing applications (i.e. StaffBase or MailChimp.)
  • Familiarity with web design, including working with WordPress or other content management systems (CMS.)


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Two years of experience and a portfolio.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive range of experience in graphic design, fine arts, or illustration preferred.
  • Three to five years of professional or educational experience in graphic design including print and digital collateral, photo editing, and print production. Illustration and photography skills a plus.
  • Experience in a higher education institution.
  • WordPress or other web content management system experience.
  • Past professional experience or knowledge of best practices with cross-platform campaigns, multimedia design, social media, and branding.
  • Knowledge of marketing and advertising can be helpful.

Starting Salary Range: $46,200 - $63,500 - $80,800 Annually (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
