Position Description
Under the direction of the President, this position is responsible for heading the College’s disabilities services program and developing and implementing programming designed to strengthen all students’ learning abilities in a wide variety of learning settings. This position is responsible for identifying learning support, including adaptive technology and electronic library resources, and training faculty and staff in their use. Finally, this position reviews data and information regarding the College’s overall student performance and collaborates with others to recommend, develop, and implement programming to address identified learning or basic skill gaps.
Position Essential Duties
- Organizes Disability Services for Students
- Evaluates and approves student requests for accommodations.
- Identifies and develops resources to support student completion.
- Coordinates with external providers to ensure that community resources that can support students, such as Vocational Rehabilitation and Dakota Link, are communicated and assessed.
- Identifies adaptive technologies to support students and trains coaches and others in their use.
- Communicates and partners with coaches, faculty, and students on delivery of accommodations.
- Identifies Learning Support Needs, Develops and Implements Programming Designed to Strengthen Students’ Learning Skills
- Provides training and support for students, faculty, and staff on effective learning strategies and techniques, including the use of technology.
- Develops and implements college-wide programming that strengthens students learning skills and promotes the development of metacognitive and critical thinking skills.
- Works with general education faculty to monitor incoming students’ skill needs, retention, and performance outcomes and partners to implement improvements in basic skills areas, including reading, writing, and math.
- Identifies and develops short-term trainings for students in the use of Windows, MS Office Suite, research, and other related learning and college preparatory/success skills.
- Provides supportive and consultative services to professional staff, faculty, and students regarding academic performance and assists in identifying interventions for individual students.
- Collaborates with faculty and staff to maintain and update existing learning resources, including library databases.
- Assists the campus community in differentiating among varied sources of information and provides assistance in strengthening their skills to identify, locate, and evaluate sources.
- Manages resource and compliance contracts including but not limited to text reading services.
- Works with VP of Teaching and Learning to assist faculty in developing program-specific assignments implementing general education skills to reflect relevant applications in technical and health-related programs.
- Stays updated in the latest research and developments in education, learning strategies, software, and programming. Attends conferences and updated training to ensure on-going effectiveness of programming at WDTC.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Developmental Education, Adult Education, Human Resources Development, or related field and at least 3-5 years’ experience in education, preferably in higher education, with knowledge of learning theories, instructional design, assessment techniques and learning disabilities. Certification in relevant areas of special education or disabilities services preferred.

- Current computer skills and the use of Windows based operating functions including Windows based software.
- Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Skill in working with students with learning disabilities or psychiatric disorders.
- Ability to effectively communicate and foster a cooperative work environment.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
- Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Knowledge of copyright laws pertaining to higher education.
- Project management skills and the ability to resolve problems and issues.
- Policies, procedures, functions, and organization of assigned areas of responsibility.
- Developing plans, interventions, and goals for addressing student needs and issues.
- Maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion.
- Demonstrated ability in oral and written communication skills.
- Time management and organizational skills with minimal supervisory direction/instruction.
