GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Civilian Report Taker is a non-sworn civilian position that serves at the discretion of the Chief of Police for an unspecified length of time. The Civilian Report Taker is responsible for contacting, interviewing, and the completion of reports from victims/witnesses of incidents which are not in-progress. This may include responding to the scene of prior incidents, taking telephone reports, or reviewing /completing internet-reported reports. . There are no benefits associated with this job.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direct supervision of the on-duty supervisor, and the general supervision of the Patrol Division commander.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
This is a non-supervisory position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Investigates property crimes and traffic crashes. Property crimes may include investigating burglaries, motor vehicle thefts, theft from motor vehicles, thefts, criminal mischief, lost/stolen or found property and criminal mischief.
- Locates and interviews complainants, victims, witnesses, etc; gather evidence and information, draw diagrams, take photographs, write or type reports, document investigations. Conducts follow-up investigation of cases as required.
- Prepares criminal, non-criminal, and administrative reports.
- Responsible for data entry of police reports into department record management system.
- Explains and provides information to citizens regarding laws, statutes, ordinances, codes, crime prevention strategies, rules and regulations.
- Refers citizens to governmental and community agencies or social service providers for assistance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· High School diploma or equivalent
· Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.
· Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes
· Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
· Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors; follow verbal and written instructions; and learn the city's geography.
· Possess or be able to obtain a valid Colorado Driver License
· Ability to maintain an extensive knowledge of data entry and retrieval from all various computers in use in the police department.
· Ability to operate a 2-way radio.
· Ability to write reports in a logical manner.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A Background investigation will be conducted.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Enters information into the Police Department Records Management System. Operates a police department vehicle in a non-emergency context, including using the 2-way radio.

Pay: From $24.13 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 20 per week
