Job Description
Friendship Shelter is a non-profit homeless services agency founded in 1988 and dedicated to ending homelessness in South Orange County, one person at a time. Friendship Shelter operates a full spectrum of services to end homelessness, including street outreach, emergency shelter, housing navigation, financial assistance, and permanent housing with supportive services. We believe in a housing-first and harm-reduction approach and value the unique experience of each client we serve. All of our programs employ trauma-informed principles and are housing-focused, low-barrier, and client-centered. Primary Purpose:
This supportive role will ensure a safe, housing-focused community is maintained with a positive and supportive culture following Friendship Shelter processes, procedures, mission, and philosophy. All interactions with clients will occur in a supportive, non-judgmental way that aligns with Housing First and Harm Reduction practices.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure the safety and security of the property at all times.
- As it is applicable, facilitates daily activity schedules.
- Monitor and document client participation and progress.
- Perform regular outreach and engagement services for clients who may be struggling with community integration.
- Model personal behaviors that reflect the problem-solving, communication, and life skills we expect of our shelter guests and community residents.
- Communicate pertinent program information through daily written logs, incident reports, client notices, and direct communication with partnering agencies.
- Communicate any maintenance or unit issues to management.
- Assist residents by answering program questions and providing guidance that allows residents to progress in their individual programs.
- Remain alert and available during shifts to respond appropriately to client needs and de-escalate any conflicts as appropriate.
- Create a strong staff presence for tenants and guests of tenants.
- Supervise assigned facilities and keep them secure from any risks to person or property.
- Contact appropriate authorities when additional security and/or police response is necessary.
Job Type:
Full-time
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
- 1 Opening Available- Monday - Friday, 12 a.m. - 8 a.m.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills.
- Empathy, discipline, focus, and strong organizational ability.
- Ability to work with individuals struggling with mental health and substance use issues.
- A collaborative, positive, and mature approach and an ethic of teamwork.
- Must be comfortable working in a Housing First and Harm Reduction setting.
Basic Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, and working with difficult tenants with compassion and patience.
- Ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A collaborative, positive, and mature approach and an ethic of teamwork.
- Reliable transportation, some driving may be required.
Work Environment:
- Supportive housing work sites and emergency homeless shelters.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Moving around worksite and climbing stairs.
